Independent Filmmakers Take ₹1 Crore Loan to Self-Release Their Film ‘Nukkad Naatak’ After Bollywood Rejection

Independent Filmmakers Challenge Bollywood Giants with Crowdfunded Nukkad Naatak

Tanmaya Shekhar, an independent director and creator behind the YouTube channel How to Enter Bollywood, has announced a high-stakes theatrical release for his debut feature film, Nukkad Naatak, following widespread rejection from major industry producers.

Shekhar and his core team, including actors Shivang Rajpal and Molshri, revealed they secured a ₹1 crore loan to fund the distribution and final production of the film after failing to find a traditional presenter or studio.

The film is scheduled to hit theatres on February 27, 2026, positioning itself directly alongside major commercial releases featuring established stars.

The project began as a struggle for industry access, where the creators spent months attempting to pitch their script to big-name producers.

According to the team, the lack of a “star” lead or a family connection in the film industry resulted in closed doors and ignored trailers. This barrier is a common hurdle for outsiders in the creator economy who find that digital popularity does not always translate to traditional cinematic credibility.

To overcome the financial deficit, the creators initially turned to their personal network, including friends and college seniors. Approximately 30 individuals contributed amounts ranging from 1 lakh to 10 lakhs to complete the initial shoot.

Despite finishing the film, the team faced a second wave of rejection when distributors demanded a high-profile presenter, such as Aamir Khan or Hrithik Roshan, to guarantee box office visibility.

In a bold move to break the cycle, the creators took an additional bank loan to self-release the movie. They are now targeting a milestone of 100 houseful shows on the first day of release to prove the viability of independent, creator-led cinema.

This strategy relies heavily on their digital audience to bypass the traditional gatekeepers of the Indian film industry.

The YouTube channel How to Enter Bollywood has documented this journey, sharing the raw realities of production, including financial instability and legal hurdles.

Director Tanmaya Shekhar and lead actors Shivang Rajpal and Molshri represent a growing wave of creators who are using digital platforms to build a community before attempting a crossover into mainstream media.

Their success or failure on February 27 could set a significant precedent for how future independent filmmakers navigate the Indian entertainment landscape.
