Key Insights From the Podcast

Regrets: When asked about past decisions over the last 10 years, Pete Lau expressed regret over launching OnePlus later than ideal, explaining that their initial focus was to deliver a flagship experience before entering the market.

Daily Device: Lau confirmed that he primarily uses the OnePlus 13S as his daily driver, though he uses all existing OnePlus phones.

Green-Line Display Issue: Responding to concerns about the notorious display defect known as the green line, Lau acknowledged that it’s now a resolved issue. He noted that it stemmed from a long-standing technical problem across the industry.

To counteract this, OnePlus introduced a lifetime warranty via the Green Line Worry-Free Solution, reinforcing its commitment to display quality.

Brand Origins and Philosophy: Lau discussed the beginnings of OnePlus, recalling decisions made around product philosophy and brand positioning, portraying himself still as a product manager rather than just the founder.

Founded in 2013 by Pete Lau and Carl Pei after Lau’s tenure at Oppo, OnePlus launched its first smartphone, the OnePlus One, in 2014 with just six employees.

The brand quickly earned a reputation for offering high-spec “flagship killer” devices at lower costs by selling directly online, a strategy that combined affordability with premium performance.

Over the years, OnePlus has emphasised superior user experience and bold design. Notable milestones include the launch of the 90 Hz display with the OnePlus 7 Pro, the first to offer such smooth refresh rates in the mid-2019 market.

This Trakin Tech podcast offers a rare, transparent glimpse into OnePlus’s internal philosophy and future direction. By candidly addressing past regrets, warranty improvements, and commitment to flagship experiences, Pete Lau not only reinforces OnePlus’s dedication to quality but also contributes to building trust with users and enthusiasts.
