Instagram is rolling out a major set of updates this October, aiming to give users more control over what they see and how they interact on the platform. Led by CEO Adam Mosseri, the new features address key user concerns, especially about the app’s algorithm, cluttered feeds, and limited content transparency.

The highlight of this update is “Tune Your Feed,” a new feature that lets users customise how Instagram’s algorithm works for them. People can now view and edit the list of topics Instagram thinks they’re interested in, adding, removing, or adjusting categories to get a more relevant and personal feed.

This update is starting with Reels, where recommendations are most influential, and will soon expand to the Explore tab and main feed. It’s Instagram’s answer to long-time complaints about irrelevant or repetitive content taking over users’ timelines.

There’s also a lot of hype about the automatic Reels voice translation with Meta AI in different languages like Hindi, English, Portuguese, and Spanish.

Instagram has also introduced Blend, a fun new way for friends to share and discover content together. With Blend, two users can create a shared Reels feed that combines videos both of them would normally see individually.

To use it, simply open a DM, tap the Blend icon, and invite a friend. Once they accept, both users can enjoy a joint stream of recommended Reels, turning scrolling into a shared social experience. Mosseri said the goal is to “spark more conversation and shared context” between users.

Reels can now be up to 3 minutes long, giving creators more freedom to tell stories, make tutorials, or share detailed insights in one clip. Alongside this, Instagram has launched new editing tools, creative effects, and improved analytics, making it easier for creators and brands to produce high-quality videos and measure their reach.

More Updates: Creative DMs, Business AI, and Smart TV Integration

  • Draw in DMs: Users can now send doodles or handwritten messages in their chats, adding a fun, personal touch.
  • AI for Businesses: A new AI tool for small businesses helps manage FAQs and customer messages automatically, improving response times and engagement.
  • Repost Feature: A redesigned repost option now gives credit to original creators, helping good content spread responsibly.
  • Instagram TV App (Experimental): Instagram is testing a TV app for smart TVs, designed to bring Reels and long-form videos to bigger screens.

Since taking over as CEO in 2018, Adam Mosseri has focused on user well-being, creator monetization, and community trust. In his recent announcement, he emphasized that the new phase of Instagram is about “putting control back in the hands of Instagrammers” through personalization, transparency, and creativity.

Early feedback has been positive, especially for the customizable feed and Reels expansion, though users are watching closely to see how transparent Instagram remains about its algorithms.

With these updates, Instagram is entering a new era where users shape their experience, creators get more freedom, and businesses connect more smartly, cementing its position as the world’s top platform for social discovery.
