The Cherno Steps Down from Full-Time YouTube to Lead Robotics Startup

Renowned software engineer and C++ YouTube educator Yan Chernikov, known to millions online as The Cherno, announced his departure from full-time content creation to join the robotics startup Lucky Robots as its Chief Technology Officer.

Chernikov will oversee the development of core technology for the firm, which focuses on building a specialized game engine designed for training artificial intelligence in robotic environments.

The move marks a significant shift for the creator, who has spent years building a massive audience by teaching complex C++ programming and game engine development to aspiring developers worldwide.

The transition comes after Chernikov expressed challenges in balancing the demands of a high-production YouTube channel with the technical rigours of leading a software engineering team.

He will now lead the development of the Lucky Engine, a simulation platform built upon his existing open-source project, Hazel.

While he will no longer produce videos as a primary profession, Chernikov indicated that he intends to share updates on the technical breakthroughs and work-in-progress projects occurring at the startup.

Lucky Robots was founded by entrepreneurs Dev and Arya, who recruited Chernikov following a series of meetings in Austin, Texas, late last year.

The startup aims to bridge the gap between virtual simulations and physical robotics, allowing AI agents to learn tasks in a digital space before being deployed in the real world. This process relies heavily on high-performance game engines to provide realistic physics and visual data for the AI to process.

Despite his new role, Chernikov assured his community that Hazel, his long-running game engine project, will remain an independent and accessible resource for the public. He confirmed that while he will have less time for personal updates, the project will continue to live on with contributions from the community.

Furthermore, Harrison, a prominent AI-focused YouTuber known as Sentdex, has also joined the Lucky Robots leadership team as the Director of AI Engineering, signaling a growing trend of startups hiring high-profile technical creators for specialized executive roles.

The Cherno currently commands a following of over 700K subscribers on his primary YouTube channel, where he is widely regarded as a premier authority on systems programming.

His career previously included a tenure as a software engineer at Electronic Arts, a global video game giant, before he transitioned into the creator economy.

By moving into a C-suite role at a venture-backed startup, Chernikov joins a small but growing group of technical influencers leveraging their public expertise to lead emerging technology companies.
