Erin Dougal Reveals Why She Left Her Dream Job at Smosh

Erin Dougal, the influential director of the Smosh main channel, announced her departure from the legendary digital comedy brand. After joining the company at age 23 as an administrative assistant, Dougal rose through the ranks over four and a half years to become a pivotal showrunner and director for the brand’s most prominent sketches.

Her exit marks a significant leadership shift for Smosh, an American sketch comedy YouTube group co-founded by Ian Hecox and Anthony Padilla, which has been a cornerstone of the creator economy since 2005.

Dougal cited a desire to challenge her own self-imposed limitations and move past the safety of behind-the-scenes work as the primary reason for her exit.

She admitted to struggling with the belief that she only garnered interest due to her proximity to famous creators rather than her own merit.

By stepping away from a stable executive role, she aims to prove her individual value as a creator and overcome the discomfort of being the center of attention.

During her tenure, Dougal was instrumental in the creative revitalization of the brand following the return of co-founder Anthony Padilla in 2023.

She served as a channel director and managed writers’ rooms for popular series like Bit City and The Spud Hut. She also produced and co-directed sketches directly with Hecox and Padilla, helping the duo transition back into their original scripted format.

The departing director expressed immense gratitude toward the Smosh founders and executive producer Alise Morales for the opportunities that allowed her to grow from a shadow observer to a lead director.

She noted that working with the individuals who essentially pioneered the YouTube platform provided her with a career path she previously thought impossible.

Despite her success, she described a recurring sense of “imposter syndrome” that she hopes to tackle through her new independent venture.

Dougal plans to pivot toward a solo career, committing to a weekly upload schedule every Tuesday on her personal channel.

She indicated that her new content will initially be “low lift” compared to the high-production sketches at Smosh. She is currently filming on her smartphone to lower the barrier to entry for her new creative chapter.

In addition to her weekly vlogs, Dougal teased a more “highly produced” series that has been in development in her mind for years. She intends to continue refining her skills in directing and writing, which remain her primary professional passions.

By moving into the spotlight, she hopes to share facets of her personality that remained hidden while she was focused on supporting the growth of others.

Smosh currently operates multiple successful verticals, including Smosh Pit, Smosh Games, and the Smosh main channel, collectively boasting over 46 million subscribers.

Dougal’s departure comes at a time when the brand has regained significant cultural momentum in the creator space.

Her personal YouTube channel, where she will now host her independent work, has already seen a surge in engagement following the announcement of her new direction.
