Popular fitness content creator and lifestyle entrepreneur Mike Thurston recently released a comprehensive review of his six-year residency in Dubai, offering a transparent look at the evolution of the city as a global hub for the creator economy.

Thurston, who relocated from the United Kingdom in 2018, detailed how the influx of high-net-worth individuals and digital nomads has fundamentally shifted the city’s infrastructure and cost of living.

While maintaining his commitment to the region, Thurston highlighted significant challenges, including worsening traffic congestion, rising real estate prices, and the often-misunderstood tax landscape for international business owners.

The veteran YouTuber, who commands a following of over 1.6 million subscribers, noted that the sheer volume of people moving to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has made simple tasks like driving across the city a major logistical hurdle.

Thurston explained that he now carefully times his movements to avoid peak traffic or relies on drivers to reclaim his time for business tasks. He also cautioned prospective residents about the soaring costs of luxury waterfront properties, admitting he regrets not purchasing real estate years ago before the current market spike.

Thurston also addressed common misconceptions regarding financial benefits, clarifying that Dubai is not a completely tax-free haven.

He emphasized that while there is currently no personal income tax, businesses must stay compliant with evolving corporate tax regulations and value-added tax (VAT) requirements.

He advised creators to hire professional accountants to avoid heavy fines, noting that the city is becoming increasingly sophisticated in its financial oversight. This is a crucial lesson in compliance which becomes more complex as a creator’s revenue grows.

Safety and convenience remain the primary reasons for the fitness mogul’s continued stay in the Middle East. He praised the city’s strict enforcement of laws, which he believes creates a uniquely secure environment compared to major European hubs like London.

He also highlighted upcoming technological advancements intended to solve current infrastructure issues, such as the proposed flying taxis and the expansion of the city southward toward the new Al Maktoum International Airport.

Reflecting on his growth, Thurston shared that his experience is shaped by his significant financial success, acknowledging that living in Dubai on a strict budget can be difficult due to constant comparison with extreme wealth.

He urged his audience to avoid FOMO (Fear Of Missing Out) and to only move if the city aligns with their specific business goals.

Thurston, who manages multiple successful YouTube channels and the THRST fitness app, plans to remain in the city for the foreseeable future but indicated he may seek a quieter villa lifestyle as his priorities shift.
