Ravi Kapoor, a 2011-batch Indian Revenue Service (IRS) officer in Customs and Indirect Taxes, once held high-pressure posts at international airports. His work spanned tax enforcement and anti-smuggling operations, often confronting smugglers, handling sensitive cargo inspections, and navigating the challenges of bureaucratic power.
Despite the prestige of the IRS, Kapoor chose to resign after a decade of service, not out of protest but driven by a deeper purpose: to guide aspirants preparing for the same exam he cleared three times, the UPSC Civil Services Examination.
In 2020, Ravi Kapoor launched his mentorship initiative, Syllabus of Life. What began as a small, free mentorship effort soon evolved into a community reaching over 3 lakh students nationwide. Many of his mentees have successfully cleared the UPSC exam, crediting his unique blend of experience, motivation, and strategy.
Unlike traditional coaching centres, Kapoor emphasises mental health, resilience, and practical study methods. With his master’s degree in clinical psychology and background as a competitive powerlifter, he integrates both mental fitness and discipline into UPSC preparation.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, Kapoor expanded his mentorship online. Today, he commands a strong following on YouTube and Instagram, where his content covers motivational talks, exam strategies, and realistic insights into civil services.
He also serves as Chief Mentor at Testbook, a leading online exam preparation platform, further bridging the gap between educators and aspirants. His guidance combines psychological insight with bureaucratic experience, making his mentorship holistic and relatable.
Kapoor’s sessions focus on more than test preparation. He openly discusses the realities of IRS service from VIP culture and political interference to the stress of enforcement duties giving aspirants a candid view of what awaits them in public service.
His authenticity has built him a reputation as a mentor who not only prepares students academically but also equips them to lead with empathy, resilience, and integrity.
Ravi Kapoor’s journey from confronting smugglers as an IRS officer to mentoring future civil servants is a testament to reinvention and mission-driven leadership.
His legacy lies not in his own career milestones but in the thousands of aspirants who now see the UPSC not as an insurmountable challenge but as an achievable path of service under his guidance.
As a mentor, public speaker, and advocate for holistic preparation, Kapoor has redefined what it means to succeed in the UPSC journey: discipline, mental strength, and unwavering purpose.
