YouTube Allows Creators to Upload Custom Thumbnails for Shorts

YouTube is rolling out fully custom thumbnails for YouTube Shorts on desktop, allowing creators to upload personalized cover images for their vertical videos.

The global video-sharing platform announced the feature update, noting that the rollout is initially available to members of the YouTube Partner Program.

The new tool addresses a long-standing request from digital creators who want greater control over how their short-form content appears across channel pages and discovery feeds.

Creators can now upload custom artwork during the desktop video submission process or edit existing uploads directly inside YouTube Studio.

Under the new update, desktop users can either upload a custom image file or select from three system-generated video frames.

Creators who prefer choosing a specific frame from the video can still do so using the YouTube mobile application.

Ritchie advised creators to design their custom thumbnails with aspect ratios in mind. While Shorts use a vertical nine-by-16 layout, the primary preview area across most device screens aligns closer to a three-by-two presentation.

Because of this layout variance, essential visual elements and text should be kept away from the outer edges to prevent unwanted cropping. YouTube confirmed that thumbnail A/B testing is not currently supported for Shorts.

Historically, YouTube designed Shorts to be a low-effort entry point for emerging content creators, with most views originating from the endless vertical feed where thumbnails are not displayed.

However, creators increasingly voiced concerns that auto-generated frames hurt the visual appeal of their main channel layouts and brand partnerships.

The custom thumbnail rollout will gradually expand to additional creators beyond the monetization program in upcoming updates.

Creators uploading via mobile devices can access desktop Studio at any point after posting to update their cover image.
