Jacksepticeye Slams YouTube Over Inconsistent Age Restrictions

Veteran gaming creator and entrepreneur Seán McLoughlin, known to millions as Jacksepticeye, publicly criticized YouTube moderation policies after the platform age-restricted a high-performing video in his latest gameplay series.

The creator alleged that the platform is applying its community guidelines inconsistently, specifically targeting the fourth installment of his Resident Evil 9: Requiem playthrough while allowing similar content from other creators to remain unrestricted.

Age restriction is a platform-level penalty that requires viewers to verify their age, often through government identification or credit cards, and typically results in limited ads (a state where a video earns significantly less revenue due to its “non-advertiser friendly” nature).

McLoughlin described the impact of age-gating as video homicide because it prevents a video from appearing in browse features (the personalized homepage and suggested video sections that drive the majority of a creator’s views).

He noted that while his first three episodes maintained steady momentum with millions of views, the fourth part saw a sharp decline in reach immediately following the restriction.

According to the creator, YouTube initially cited inappropriate language (the use of profanity) as the cause for the flag, but later changed the justification to graphic visuals and violence after he appealed the decision through his internal partner representative.

The controversy highlights growing frustration among the gaming community regarding YouTube’s updated approach to graphic violence in gaming.

New policies implemented late last year allow the platform to age-restrict content featuring realistic human characters subjected to sustained or zoomed-in violence.

McLoughlin argued that because every creator playing the horror title encounters the same scripted cutscenes and gameplay scenarios, the decision to flag his specific video while others remain open to all audiences points to a systemic lack of clarity in how the algorithm operates.

The Irish-born creator is one of the most influential figures in the history of the platform, having joined in 2012 and amassed a following of over 30 million subscribers.

Known for his high-energy “Let’s Play” style (a genre where creators record themselves playing and commenting on video games), he has recorded over 5,000 videos and generated more than 17 billion total views.

His critique follows similar complaints from other top-tier creators like CoryxKenshin, who has also faced age-gating on non-profane content, sparking a broader conversation about digital privacy and the requirement for users to provide sensitive identification to access mature gaming content.
