Unleash the Avatar: Varun Mayya’s Mythic Soulslike Could Be India’s First Global Gaming Breakthrough

Unleash The Avatar Game by Varun Mayya

Varun Mayya, a well-known name in India’s tech and creator ecosystem, has set his sights on a new frontier: global gaming. His studio, Aeos Games, has just dropped the first 12-minute Early Alpha trailer for Unleash the Avatar, a breathtaking, myth-inspired third-person action RPG that’s already being hailed as one of the most ambitious projects to ever come out of India.

Released on YouTube, the trailer showcases cinematic visuals, precise combat, and a deeply Indian aesthetic, blending the storytelling grandeur of Hindu epics with the punishing gameplay of the “Soulslike” genre popularized by titles like Elden Ring and Sekiro.

Set in a fictional coastal settlement called Vishwapur, Unleash the Avatar transports players to a world on the edge of chaos. When the barrier between Earth and Naraka (the underworld) collapses, demonic Nisthari Rakshas spill into the mortal realm, wreaking havoc.

The player steps into the role of a warrior infused with a fragment of Lord Vishnu’s divine essence, tasked with restoring balance and sealing the realms once again.

But this isn’t a straight retelling of mythology. The world of Unleash the Avatar reimagines Indian epics in an alternate high-fantasy setting—where moss-covered temples meet crumbling sea forts, and the air thrums with mystic energy. Every frame feels rich, detailed, and globally appealing, staying true to Indian culture without falling into clichés.

Aeos Games has packed Unleash the Avatar with all the hallmarks of a top-tier Soulslike, parrying, dodging, stamina-based combat, and perfectly timed strikes but with some fresh, distinctly Indian innovations.

The “fragmented chakra” system introduces a dynamic ranged weapon that lets players experiment with powers and attacks mid-battle, while mechanics like “feather prism combat” add new layers of tactical depth.

The combat isn’t for the faint-hearted, it’s tough, fast, and demands focus, rewarding precision and patience. According to Aeos, every detail of the world, from enemy AI to boss battles, has been handcrafted, without a single trace of generative AI.

That commitment to craftsmanship shows. The game’s environments use photogrammetry, scanning real Indian heritage sites to recreate authentic textures and lighting.

The development team of 40 includes veterans who have worked on international hits such as Ghost of Tsushima, Hogwarts Legacy, and Path of Exile 2, ensuring that Unleash the Avatar not only looks stunning but plays with world-class finesse.

Unleash the Avatar could mark a turning point for Indian game development—a signal that the country can produce AAA-quality games that don’t just mimic the West but bring something original to the global stage.

The combination of mythology, handcrafted artistry, and technical excellence could finally place India on the world gaming map when it releases in 2026, starting with PC and potentially expanding to consoles.

As one developer noted, “We don’t just want to make a game inspired by India, we want to make a world-class game from India.”

If Aeos Games delivers on its promise, Unleash the Avatar may not just unleash a hero; it could unleash a new era for Indian gaming itself.

Perhaps the most remarkable part of this project is that it’s entirely self-funded. Varun and Rohan Mayya, Aeos Games’ CEO, have chosen independence over publisher pressure, relying on community support and Steam wishlists to fuel momentum.

It’s a bold move in an industry where Indian studios often rely on outsourced projects or mobile-focused ventures rather than building full-fledged premium titles.

The gamble seems to be paying off. The trailer has sparked massive buzz across gaming forums, YouTube, and Reddit, with players applauding its technical polish and cultural authenticity. Critics have praised Aeos for avoiding stereotypes while crafting a world that feels both Indian and universally immersive.

Still, early testers note that the combat could use more “weight” and that voice acting feels uneven, reminding fans that this is still a true early alpha. Yet even those critiques are paired with optimism, most agree it’s already far ahead of any Indian-made action RPG in both design and ambition.
