In a major pre-election twist, popular folk and devotional singer Maithili Thakur has officially joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and will contest the upcoming 2025 Bihar Assembly elections from the Alinagar constituency in Darbhanga district. Her name appeared in the BJP’s second list of candidates released on October 14, confirming days of speculation after her high-profile induction into the party in Patna a day earlier.

Thakur’s political debut has instantly become one of the most talked-about developments in Bihar’s election season. Known for her mesmerising performances and deep connection with the people of Mithilanchal, her entry adds both a cultural and emotional layer to the BJP’s campaign strategy.

Party leaders see her as a bridge between Bihar’s proud cultural heritage and a younger generation looking for change and representation.

Born in Benipatti, Madhubani, 25-year-old Maithili Thakur has long been recognized as a torchbearer of Maithili and folk traditions. She rose to fame through her soulful renditions of devotional and regional songs that went viral on social media, earning her state-level honors and a massive online following.

Beyond her artistry, Maithili has often used her platform to highlight social and cultural issues, becoming a respected voice among Bihar’s youth. Her shift from the stage to the political arena reflects a broader effort by the BJP to bring in faces that resonate with both regional identity and modern aspirations.

The announcement of her candidacy came in the presence of Bihar BJP President Dilip Jaiswal, who praised the move as “strategic and inspiring.”

Thakur will replace sitting MLA Mishrilal Yadav, whose ticket was withdrawn after reports of internal dissatisfaction. Welcoming her to the party, Jaiswal said the decision reflected the BJP’s intent to empower fresh, relatable leaders capable of connecting with people at the grassroots.

During her induction, Maithili expressed her admiration for Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, emphasising her motivation to serve the people of Bihar.

“I am very impressed with PM Narendra Modi and Bihar CM Nitish Kumar. I am here to serve society and contribute to the development of Bihar,” she said, adding that she hopes to strengthen the identity and pride of Mithila through policy and action.

Party insiders revealed that her candidacy followed several rounds of discussions with senior leaders, who believe her cultural influence will translate into greater youth engagement and higher voter turnout across the region.

The 2025 Bihar Assembly elections will be held in two phases, on November 6 and November 11, with results declared on November 14. The BJP, contesting 101 seats under the NDA alliance, faces tough competition from the Mahagathbandhan led by the RJD and Congress.

By fielding Maithili from Alinagar, the party is betting big on the emotional connect of culture and tradition to strengthen its hold over the Mithilanchal belt, an area rich in heritage and politically influential.

Maithili Thakur’s move from a celebrated singer to a political candidate marks a significant moment in Bihar’s political landscape, one where music, culture, and public service intertwine. As her supporters rally behind her new journey, all eyes are on Alinagar to see whether her melody of devotion can turn into the rhythm of victory.
