Aditya Ranjan Details Early Career Struggles And Quitting Government Job For Teaching

Aditya Ranjan, the prominent mathematics educator and co-founder of Rankers Gurukul, reflected on his transformative five-year career journey during a recent emotional address to his students.

Ranjan, who is widely recognized as the Math King by millions of Staff Selection Commission (SSC) aspirants, detailed his transition from a government job aspirant living in a ₹2,800 rented room to becoming one of India’s most influential figures in the creator economy and ed-tech space.

The popular educator revealed that his teaching career actually began in January 2021, not with mathematics, but with English vocabulary lessons.

At the time, Ranjan operated from a humble setup where a green curtain served as his chroma key background, a technique used to replace physical backgrounds with digital images.

He disclosed that he initially used a borrowed pen tablet and a 500 rupee microphone to record his first sessions because he could not afford high-end equipment.

Ranjan emphasized the intensity of the grind required to build a digital brand, noting that in the early days, he served as his own thumbnail designer, typist, and social media manager.

He explained that he would often stay awake until 5 a.m. to respond to student comments and queries, viewing personal engagement as a critical factor for growth.

This hands-on approach helped him navigate the competitive landscape where many new teachers enter the market daily but few achieve long-term sustainability.

One of the most significant turning points Ranjan discussed was his decision to resign from his position as an Excise Inspector in the Customs department, a role he secured after achieving top marks in the SSC CGL exam.

He shared the difficulty of explaining this choice to his family, particularly given the high social prestige associated with government jobs in his home state of Bihar. He chose to pursue teaching because of his passion for mentorship and his desire to help other students achieve similar success.

The educator also touched upon the personal sacrifices inherent in high-growth content creation, mentioning that the demands of maintaining Rankers Gurukul have left him with little time for a personal life or marriage.

He described his success not in financial terms, but through the achievements of his students, noting that seeing his pupils secure high ranks in competitive exams serves as his primary motivation.

Rankers Gurukul has grown into a major platform for government job preparation, boasting millions of subscribers across its various channels. Ranjan himself achieved a perfect score of 50 out of 50 in three subjects during his own competitive exam phase, a credential that initially built trust with his audience.

As he looks toward 2026, the creator-entrepreneur promised even more innovation for his students, urging them to prioritize hard work over the opinions of skeptics.
